Can I give my companion a better voice?

Yes. Settings → Companion voices lets you pick a natural-sounding voice for each kind of companion, rather than the basic one built into your phone. These higher quality voices come with the paid plans, and calls that use them cost more credits per minute — the call screen tells you the rate before you start, so nothing is charged by surprise.
