Am I charged if creating a companion fails?

No. If anything goes wrong — the AI cannot be reached, or what it produced does not pass our safety check — the credits go straight back to your balance, into the same place they came from. You are only charged for a companion that actually arrives. Closing the app partway through does not lose your place either: reopen Create and it picks up where it stopped.
